The back story runs something like this: back in 2014, Fraser Dunn, the then chief engineer of Aston’s Q Advanced Engineering division, and David King, Director of Advanced Operations and Motorsport, got chatting about some old One-77 development prototypes that were kicking around. Unsurprisingly their first thought was to make a faster one. They envisioned a One-77 R. The trouble was that the project that interested and excited them also bought out the small boys in almost every other department at Aston Martin. Design wanted a piece of the pie, and when they got the go ahead to make some sweeping changes, including shaping the bodywork in carbon instead of aluminium, every other department started pushing to make equally significant changes. So the plan to use the existing 7.3-litre V12 was abandoned. Aston Martin Racing pointed out that they had a very potent 6.0-litre V12 running in the Vantage GT3 racer that, with a significant amount of modification (including gaining a litre of capacity), would deliver on one of the key parameters – over 800bhp. In the autumn of 2008, a camouflaged mockup of a car was displayed at the Aston Martin booth in the Paris Motor Show. This announced the development of what was to be a 77-car run on its new, ultra-exclusive, limited edition flagship. The fully rendered design of this model, appropriately dubbed the One-77, was shown at the spring 2009 Geneva Motor Show, and a production version followed soon after. While it retains the handsome image of models such as the DB9 and DBS, its styling has been greatly modified both in shape and aerodynamics. At first glance, it may appear to be just a heavily modified production car; but in reality, the One-77 is a special model that has been newly developed, completely, from the ground up. It was based on the 1998 Aston Martin Project Vantage concept car. The Aston Martin Vanquish was designed by Ian Callum and it promised supercar performances into a classic design package. The idea behind the vehicle was to inject adrenaline into a Grand Tourer. Usually, any GT car was able to put down some good performances, but its main reason was a luxurious interior mated to a powerful engine able to soak up the roads. The Aston Martin Vanquish dared to be even more than that. Inside, the Vanquish was available as a two-seater or in a 2+2 configuration. Just don't be fooled, the “+2” seats in the back were there only for taxation and insurance purposes. Other than that, they were good only to be used as an in-car storage area for a duffle bag. The interior was garnished with leather and aluminum. But the turn-signal and wiper stock were in cheap plastic, carried over from a Ford Fiesta (or Focus). Its cabin has lost the two-plus-one seating layout that the regular Cygnet shared with the iQ, and instead there is a pair of Recaro race buckets mounted within the protection of a structure-strengthening roll cage. The relocated firewall creates an offset driving position, with the pedals set at what soon proves to be an ankle-cricking angle. But everything else is smart and well finished, with a carbon-fiber dashboard, Vantage instruments, and the sports car's gear-selection buttons in place of the cheap Toyota shifter in the regular Cygnet. There's even a fly-off emergency brake positioned between the front seats. The engine is fired to life using Aston's trademark glass key fob—something else the regular Cygnet didn't get—and from the get-go, enough noise enters the cabin to explain the lack of any other audio system. It's hot as well, staying sticky in the modest heat of an English summer's day despite the best efforts of the air-conditioning system. The ride is firm, and the short wheelbase means that, over certain frequencies of rough surfaces, it takes on the choppy heave of a small boat in heavy seas. But none of that matters. To drive this car is to realize that it can hurt to grin too much. Aston claims that, being around 550 pounds lighter than the Vantage S, the V8 Cygnet can actually outaccelerate that coupe. We didn't confirm the claimed 4.2-second zero-to-60-mph time, and certainly never got close to Aston's terrifying assertion of a 170-mph top speed, but those numbers do feel believable from the driver's seat, the sensation of speed enhanced by the bellowing soundtrack and the nose-up attitude the car adopts under full throttle. The Cygnet's dynamic cues share much with the Vantage S. The steering possesses similar weighting and the talkative feel of the donor car, with the throttle delivering the same proportional responses. The automated manual transmission has lost some refinement—not a quality it ever possessed in abundance—with hesitancy between gears and a tendency to get confused if multiple instructions from the shift paddles come too close together. But we quickly gained the knack of timing shifts carefully and lifting the throttle to smooth upshifts. With the combination of its short wheelbase and a lack of stability control (apparently at the new owner's request), the V8 Cygnet needs to be treated with a healthy degree of respect. Combining throttle application with any significant degree of steering input creates the unmistakable sensation of the rear end running short of grip, not a dynamic trait we wanted to explore in greater depth on public roads in an irreplaceable one-off. But the biggest driving challenge is the more prosaic one of getting used to the difference between the car's apparent width when sitting in the narrow cabin and how much wider it actually is. As part of the deal to make the V8 Cygnet, Aston promised its new owner that it would never make another. But if there is anyone out there with an equally bonkers ambition for an Aston product and sufficient funds to make it a reality, they are invited to get in touch with the Q division to discuss it.     BRANDS Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a French car manufacturer of high-performance automobiles, founded in 1909 in the then German city of Molsheim, Alsace by Italian-born Ettore Bugatti. Bugatti cars were known for their design beauty (Ettore Bugatti was from a family of artists and considered himself to be both an artist and constructor) and for their many race victories. Up to last year, KMS Motorsport was successful with the Super Touring version of the Audi A4 quattro in the Swedish Touring Car Championship. A change in regulations left KMS with no other choice than to develop a completely new car for the 2003 season. With support from the Audi Sport Customer Department, a race version of the new Audi A4 complying with the “Super 2000 Touring Car” regulations was developed. Because it is a national project, supported by the Swedish Audi importer, the new A4 race version was provisionally homologated only in Sweden and not however, with the international federation FIA. The advantage for KMS: Cars homologated nationally weigh 40 kilograms less than those cars authorised by the FIA and, for example, compete in the European Touring Car Championship. The engine sub-frame at the front and the transmission at the rear are identical for all DTM cars and limit the freedom of the engineers with respect to the suspension, which has to be mounted to these shared components. In addition, steel as the material for the A-arms and the tube dimensions are specified. For the hub carrier, the regulations define the material and the production process to be used. A milled aluminum part with a minimum weight is prescribed. Furthermore, a strict provision in the regulations defines the wheel hubs and the rims for all entrants. The possibilities in the area of aerodynamics are restricted as well. Air flow through the body, as in the case of the current A4 DTM, and complex additional wings at the rear are no longer allowed. This creates a stronger visual resemblance between the race car and the production model. At the same time the new DTM vehicles are to respond less sensitively to body contact with other vehicles and deliver slipstream improvements - also thanks to the larger rear wing. Lancia at that time was running with the Stratos that in 1982 was substituted by the 037 Rally. It was very light and agile thus that in the 1983 it won the World Championship, the European and the Italian one. But the Audi was optimizing its revolutionary racing 4WD system so that from the 1984 it was really difficult to compete against it with a simple RWD. Lancia and almost all other manufacturers had to adapt their prototype to 4WD and indeed Lancia and Peugeot focused the target by creating 2 mid engine prototypes that for the rest of the time they lived made a series of battles that shone the heavy nose Audi a bit in shadows. Lancia created the S4 (Sovralimentata, 4WD) that was basically an updated 037 with similar suspensions, a new spaceframe with lighter alloy and composite materials, a new 4WD drivetrain and a new powertrain. Lancia filed many patents for the S4. Some reguarded the AWD system that used a transfer case to asymmetrically split the torque between the two axles while one reguarded the twin charging system that force the air induction with a compressor at mid-low engine speed and with a turbine at higher ones. As soon as the turbine has spooled up, the compressor was pneumatically bypassed, to allow the turbine to operate without thermodynamic efficiency losses typical of the compressor at higher rpms. The first S4 official race was Algrave, Portugal in 31 October 1985 when Lancia hadn't produced yet the 200 street versions of the car requested to homologate the race one. The FIA anticipated its homologation to allow Lancia to participate to the championship that was starting but no one knows if Lancia has ever produced all the 200 "Stradale" models... By the way, within 1985 and 1986, Lancia and other competitors, working on those and other technical innovations like tires compound and aerodynamic efficiency, raised safety and performance level of rally cars by several points.
